Paying attention to rocks and thinking about a time frame outside not only my own lifetime but human temporality ironically made me feel more at home in the world, or at least it helped me make sense of it. Over the course of my life, every new lens has added to this feeling: that the world is not some arbitrary, given thing, nor am I some anonymous and unrelated person dropped into it. There is continuity between the rocks' existence and mine. I am also humbly reminded of how much work and time and patience goes into even just beginning to grasp the complexity that surrounds me.
